Congratulations to the 2011 Rodney Odom Memorial Foundation Scholarship winners Victoria Brooks & Sarah Hill
The Mission
Did you know?...More than 7,000 student athletes die suddenly on the court or field each year. Most of their parents had no idea that their child was even at risk.
The Rodney Odom Memorial Foundation is a non-profit
organization with the mission of providing scholarships for local high school seniors and educating parents about the risk of cardiac disease in student athletes as well as provide a teen athlete cardiac screening (TACS) program to local youth. The painless non-invasive tests only take about 15 minutes and can prevent an avoidable tragedy. Our dear friend, Rodney Odom, passed away in October of 2008 of heart failure. He was a basketball player, Kingwood High Alum, McDonald’s All-American, a former collegiate & pro athlete, and co-founder of Project Hoops; which was his greatest joy…giving to the community by coaching kids. It only seemed natural to establish a foundation in his memory to continue his legacy of giving to the youth of Kingwood. We hope that you will join us!
Free Cardiac Screening at The Texas Heart Institute
The Rodney Odom Memorial Foundation is a charitable non-profit organization
with the mission of educating parents and teens about the risk of
cardiovascular disease in student athletes and informing parents of the
screening options available. Though our relationship with Texas Heart
Institute we have been extended a unique opportunity to include students
entering; 6th, 7th, 8th & 9th grades (athletes & non-athletes) in a
grant-funded clinical study at no charge in the Texas Medical Center now
through September 1st. The study uses the best testing methods possible;
including an EKG & MRI. If you have a student entering the 6th, 7th, 8th
&/or 9th grade and you would like that child to participate in the study,
please call 713-218-2112 and tell them you were referred by the The Rodney Odom Memorial Foundation or contact us by email at amber@rodneyodom.com for more information.
For more information about the Rodney Odom Memorial Foundation, please
visit: www.rodneyodommemorial.org
This testing is FREE of charge, however if you would like to make a
charitable donation to the Rodney Odom Memorial Foundation to help us share
the news of screening options like this one and educate the community about
the risks of cardiovascular disease you may do so at our website. http://www.rodneyodom.com/ROMF_Donate.htm. Your support is appreciated and
saves lives!
Every year thousands of children suffer Sudden Cardiac Death (SCD) many of
them as a result of activities on the court or field coupled with a cardiac
condition. Sadly, most of their parents had no idea that their child was
even at risk. When news stories talk about young athletes dying suddenly, it
is usually because they had either Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM) or a
coronary artery anomaly (CAA).The leading cause of these deaths in athletes
is a detectable heart condition called Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM)
which affects 1 out of 500 people and often has no symptoms. There are
painless non-invasive tests to detect HCM and other CCAs that can save
lives. Currently these tests are not part of routine physicals and not a
prerequisite to participate in athletics. But, don't let that be the reason
you don't get your loved ones tested.

Teen Athlete Cardiac Screening (TACS) is painless non-invasive testing THAT only takes about 15 minutes and can prevent an avoidable tragedy. Your giving makes our mission of educating parents about the risk of cardiac disease in student athletes and providing a TACS program to local youth in Rodney’s memory possible. We can’t do it without you!
With proper funding our first TACS day will be in the spring of 2011 in Kingwood.
